No, it was not about Manny Pangilinan and the college basketball teams he sponsored. But it looked that way when La Salle beat UAAP champion Ateneo, 71-62, yesterday to win the Philippine Collegiate Champions League.
JVee Casio scored 20 points in his final game for the Green Archers, who lost all their games in the last UAAP season to Ateneo. Casio graduated last term with an A.B. in sports studies.
Last Saturday, La Salle beat NCAA champion San Beda, 62-61, which in turn lost yesterday to Letran to settle for fourth place.
Pangilinan is the chief financier of Ateneo and San Beda. He is also the CEO of PLDT and Smart, two of the league's chief sponsors, which gave the national champions P1 million for athletic scholarships.
The victory will send the Green Archers to the Universiade 09 next month in Belgrade, Serbia.
